My good friend Ben Barger, 2008 US Olympian and 6 time US National Champion said simply “Dude, come train.”  December 1, 2008 I joined Ben in Florida for three months of intense training with Ben, 2004 Olympian Carolina Borges, and 2000 Silver Medallist Amelie Lux that took me from an out of shape banker to my first World Cup race at the end of January.  I promised myself that I would quit if I finished last – on two months training at a top level race – I finished second to last and continued my Olympic Odyssey into 2009 and beyond.

Rewind to the summer or 2000, the year before I began my undergraduate degree at Eckerd College… I had chosen the school for its windsurfing program, intent on training through college and competing in the 2004 Olympic Games.  Instead by the end of the summer I developed tendinitis in my arms serious enough that I couldn’t carry groceries without pain.  With my hopes of windsurfing gone I instead found my way into triathlon, doing my first race in August 2000.  Over the next 7 years my triathlon oddyssey took me to the short course World Championships, the podium in the 18-24 age group at Ironman Arizona, and finally ended on the baking lava fields of the legendary Hawaii Ironman in October 2007.

So here I am, looking toward the 2011 training season and then on to the 2011 and 2012 World Championships where top 80 finish should assure me a spot at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Wish me luck!
